When it comes to choosing the right dual battery system, knowing which components to choose can be confusing. With chargers and monitoring and control systems, trying to figure out which parts are essential and which parts are nice to have can be tricky.
While the REDWorks range of pre-wired dual battery systems makes installation simple, there is still the question of ‘which panel is right for me?’
We’re here to simplify that choice and match you with the perfect panel.
FOUR QUICK QUESTIONS
When choosing your REDWorks panel, we recommend asking yourself a few quick questions:
- How many accessories do I want to power?
- Do I want to use my phone to switch appliances?
- Do I want advanced charging features?
- What chemistry is my secondary battery?
WHAT ACCESSORIES DO I WANT TO POWER?
Knowing what accessories you want to power allows you to determine how many connection points you’ll need for your perfect off-grid power setup.
If you’re only looking to run a fridge and maybe a few lights, a simpler setup will often do the trick. Whereas if you want a system that can grow and expand with you as your off-grid journey continues, you’ll need to lean towards a bigger system.
DO I WANT TO USE MY PHONE TO SWITCH APPLIANCES?
This question drills down into how smart you want your system to be. While all the REDWorks panels have a Smart Battery Monitor that allows you to keep track of your input and output power through a phone app, if you want to switch your lights, fridge or compressor on or off through an app as well, you’ll need a smarter system.
DO I WANT ADVANCED CHARGING FEATURES?
This question allows you to determine which type of BCDC and dual battery system features you’re after. Do you want a simple set-and-forget system that you only check occasionally or are you looking for a more advanced system that allows you to limit input and output current and has start battery charging and recovery capabilities?
WHAT CHEMISTRY IS MY SECONDARY BATTERY?
What chemistry is my secondary battery?
The final question is simple, are you going to be running a lead-acid or lithium secondary battery? This allows us to determine what sized BCDC you’ll need. Other things that are worth considering in this question are if your vehicle is a hybrid or has limited surplus power or if you’re planning to install multiple auxiliary batteries for extra capacity.
