REDARC are excited to follow the journey of our sponsored World Solar Challenge teams, TAFE SA and Flinders Automotive Solar Team, FAST.
They have headed to Darwin to prepare for the challenge that will see them journey 3,000kms in their solar powered vehicles, leaving Darwin on the 13th of October and finishing in Adelaide on the 20th of October.
The World Solar Challenge is designed to push the limits of technological innovation by travelling the outback in a vehicle powered only by the energy of the sun. Teams comprise of tertiary and secondary students from over 30 countries.
TAFE SA and FAST are two of three South Australian teams participating in this year’s challenge.
FAST commented, “We are grateful to have some amazing sponsors backing our entry, accompanying the support we receive from our university and community.”
REDARC sponsored FAST’s inaugural event in 2017, which saw them unveil their brand-new car, the Investigator MK III designed to be a practically sized roadworthy solar vehicle. This year the FAST team have entered the vehicle into the Cruiser Class challenge for the second time.

Team TAFE SA heads to Darwin with their SAV (Solar Articulated Vehicle) – a cruiser cab and eight-metre trailer.
TAFE SA students and staff as well as students and teachers from St Patrick’s Technical College have been involved in the project which has taken shape over the past 12 months.
In 2017, TAFE SA say they set a precedent by entering the cab of the SAV in the challenge and are pushing the boundaries again this year with the addition of the trailer.
TAFE SA Team Manager, Mark Ready said, “We hope it [SAV and trailer] inspires people and helps them see what is possible. It’s an efficient design that people can identify with.”
