TOW-PRO ACCESSORIES FAQ

HOW DO YOU USE A BRAKE CONTROLLER WHILE TOWING?

There are two common ways of applying the trailer brakes with an electric brake controller: User-Controlled and Proportional (or inertia sensing). User-Controlled is a good basic mode, where the user adjusts the braking force via an interface with the controller, and when a brake light signal is given the trailer brakes apply to the set level.

Quality Proportional Mode brake controllers use accelerometers, which are advanced pieces of electronics that are small and robust. They provide great accuracy in braking measurement across a range of conditions to give optimum braking in response to how hard the vehicle is braking.

The REDARC Tow-Pro Elite Electric Brake Controller has both User-Controlled and Proportional modes, which really makes it the ultimate solution for all towing scenarios.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU TOW WITHOUT A BRAKE CONTROLLER?

Towing without a brake controller when you're towing a trailer with brakes can lead to unsafe and potentially dangerous situations. Without a brake controller, several safety issues can arise:

  • Limited braking power: A trailer with brakes requires its own braking system to help slow down the entire towing setup. Without a brake controller, the trailer's brakes won't engage, putting excessive load on the towing vehicle's brakes. This can lead to longer stopping distances, increased wear on the towing vehicle's brakes, and potential brake overheating.
  • Reduced control: Towing a heavy trailer without proper braking can result in reduced control over the entire setup. During emergency braking or sudden stops, the trailer's momentum can cause it to push the towing vehicle, leading to jack-knifing or skidding.
  • Increased risk of accidents: Insufficient braking power can increase the risk of accidents, especially in situations where you need to stop suddenly or navigate downhill slopes. The added weight of the trailer can make it challenging to maintain control over the entire setup.
  • Strain on towing vehicle: Towing without trailer brakes places extra strain on the towing vehicle's drivetrain, suspension, and tires. Over time, this can lead to premature wear and potential mechanical failures.
  • Legal and safety requirements: In Australia, it’s a legal requirement to have trailer brakes if the trailer's weight exceeds certain limits. Towing without the required brake controller could lead to fines or worse.
  • Risk of trailer sway: Without trailer brakes, there's a higher risk of trailer sway, especially when braking or encountering crosswinds. Trailer sway can make the entire setup unstable and difficult to control.

DO YOU NEED ELECTRIC BRAKE CONTROLLER TO TOW A CARAVAN?

If your caravan's GTM is above 750 kg, it is essential to have brakes installed on the caravan. And when your caravan has brakes, it is typically a legal requirement to have an appropriate brake controller installed in the towing vehicle.
